Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry was fined $25,000 for throwing his gumshield into the stands during his team’s 122-120 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, leading to his ejection from the game, the NBA announced on Friday.
Curry was sent off with just 73 seconds left in Wednesday’s game at Chase Center after getting angry with teammate Jordan Poole. Curry wanted to take a shot from the logo and signaled to Poole that it was open, but Poole opted to shoot it himself. Poole missed the shot and Curry cracked a little as he ran downfield to get back into defense.
Curry ripped off his gumshield and threw it into the stands, prompting a quick ejection.
«It was a pivotal moment in the game, and the way our season went, questions about a heightened sense of urgency…when you want something really bad…I reacted in a way that knocked me out and put the team in a tough spot,» Curry said after the win, via ESPN.
Poole didn’t seem to realize why Curry was so mad at him immediately after the match, but the two seemed perfectly fine in the tunnel.
Curry had 34 points and shot 10 of 19 from the field in 35 minutes before being ejected. He is averaging 29.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.2 assists this season.
